Incorporating healing foods into your diet can help you to feel better and more empowered.
On this page I have listed recipes that incorporate a range of healing plants (often referred to as adaptogens), ayurvedic herbs and superfoods that will help nourish your body and assist in reducing inflammation. These powerful ingredients can help restore the physiological functions of the body – if taken regularly. Some of the ingredients have an acquired taste (like wheatgrass and medicinal mushrooms) so start off slowly and increase the dosage as your taste buds adapt!
Homemade Almond Mylk
1 cup almonds
4 cups filtered water
½ tsp vanilla
Pinch of sea salt
Soak the almonds in filtered water overnight.
Rinse and blend the nuts with dates and 4 cups of filtered water until the water turns cloudy.
Pour the liquid through a cheese cloth/muslin square squeezing out all of the mylk and leaving behind the pulp. Dry the pulp and store for future use.
Return liquid to the blender and add vanilla and a pinch of sea salt.
Store in an airtight bottle in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Matcha – Maca Brain Boosting Latte
½ tsp of matcha powder
I tsp maca
1 cup frothy warmed milk
Sweetener to taste – if you need it (e.g. honey or stevia work well. I like to use some vanilla paste).
Mix the powders with a little water to form a paste. Not boiling water as this will burn the matcha. Add warmed frothy milk & enjoy!
Adaptogenic Hot Choc
¼ tsp cinnamon
1.5 tbsp cacao
1 cup nut mylk
½ tsp mushroom powder (e.g Reishi/Chaga/Shiitake)
Pinch of sea salt
Mix the powders with a little water to form a paste. Add warmed frothy milk & enjoy!
½ yellow pepper
2 sticks of celery
2.5 cm each of turmeric* and ginger
Juice all ingredients.
*substitute with ¼ teaspoon of powdered turmeric if fresh is not available. Blend it into the juice with ice at the end.
Green Carrot Juice
½ tsp green powder (e.g. supergreens/spirulina/wheatgrass)
Juice the carrots and add green powder before blending with ice.
Pinch of salt to taste
Soak 2 cups of almonds overnight.
The next day, dry them thoroughly in an oven at 170C for 10-15 minutes. Check them every 5 minutes to ensure they don’t over toast. Then blend in a food proccesser until the desired consistency is reached (this could take up to 20 mins). Periodically stop to scrape down the sides and let the processor cool.
Add a pinch of salt to taste.
Detoxifying Facial- Mask Recipie
1 tsp spirulina or NYR Organic Greens Blend
1 tbsp. jojoba oil
2 tbsp. bentonite clay
Water (enough to form a thick paste)
Optional 3-5 drops of either lavender/rose/camomile essential oil.
Mix all ingredients within a plastic mixing bowl. Do not use metal here as it can interfere with the minerals within the clay. Apply immediately and leave on for 5-15 minutes. Don't let the mask get too dry and crumbly. Spritz face with toner to loosen before washing the mask off.
1 cup unsweetened nut mylk (I like coconut)
½ tsp turmeric
½ tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp ashwagandha *
1 tsp each coconut oil & liquid sweetener (e.g date paste)
pinch each of cardamom, ginger, black pepper** and nutmeg
Add all of the ingredients into a saucepan, whisk, and heat gently for 5 minutes. * I am a big fan of this adaptogenic herb which has shown to lower cortisol, balance thyroid hormones, reduce stress/anxiety and balance blood-sugar levels. ** Black pepper adds a kick in this recipe, but more importantly, it increases the bioavailability of curcumin (the chemical compound in turmeric).
Strawberries & Cream Overnight Oats
1 cup oats
1.5-2 cups coconut milk
6 large strawberries* (pretty much 1 punnet. Organic preferably)
1tsp date paste
1/5 tbs chia seeds
If organic, keep the hulls on for added green goodness!
Blend all the ingredients, excepts the oats. Add the oats to the creamy mixture. Pour into cups/bowls and garnish (i used strawberries, coconut flakes and freeze dried raspberries). Pop in the fridge overnight. Yummy!
Makes enough for 2 kiddies or a very hungry adult!
Vegan & Sugar-Free Chocolate Sauce
3 tbsp cacao powder
3 tbsp coconut oil
3 tbsp date paste
Pinch of cinnamon
Frozen or fresh fruit of choice (bananas & strawberries work well here).
Melt the coconut oil in a bain-marie, then add the date paste, cacao and cinnamon. Once fully combined allow to cool very slightly.
To make vegan nice-cream pops dip frozen bananas in to the sauce which will solidify very quickly. Alternatively, use the sauce as a dip for fresh fruits such as strawberries.
